Cubo Claro, Wake Up and Enjoy

My first take on the Cubo Claro is, that it looks like any other Connecticut. I don’t mean that in a bad way, more like a, “here goes another light morning cigar” type way. I find myself trying to clear my mind, because most of the Connecticuts I’ve smoked seems like smoking wet newspaper through PVC pipe. So anyway I grab the lighter that I can’t seem to find, because it’s 6 A.M. and only one eye is open at this point, and fire it up. After smoking through the foot and into the first third, I get the taste of Cedar and a little earthiness (round earth not the flat one). The retrohale combines those flavors and adds a subtile hint of citrus, I’m thinking orange peels. The Cubo is smoking pretty good, as I move into the upper middle, in addition to the flavors mentioned I’m getting a hint of black pepper which kind of wakes up the palate. As I get within 10,000 feet and prepare for landing, the end of this stick remained consistent and surprisingly pleasant. I’d say after smoking the Cubo Claro, I will change my thinking on Connecticuts as this cigar has added some light to the sometimes too light to even try smokes. This cigar smokes Mild throughout and maybe touches the surface of medium in the final third. It burned great, having no issues with draw or the need to be touched up. The smooth and lightly creamy blend of Cedar, earthiness, little citrus and dash of pepper makes this one a good add for you early risers or for those who want a light treat between powerhouses.

Cubo, Anything but Square

At first glance, or should I say at first sniff, I’m eager to get this thing lit. The rich, dark Mexican San Andreas wrapper gives that appeal that has you salivating and reaching for the lighter. Interesting to note, before lighting I got a hint of sweet off the tip which sparks my curiosity. Going into the first third, smooth chocolate and cedar are my initial thoughts with some slight citrus on the retrohale. Heading into the mid section, I find myself waiting for the spice that is usually present in the San Andreas wrapper but to no avail. The spice is pleasantly muted by the mildly sweet chocolate and citrus notes. Rounding 3rd into the home stretch, chocolate continues to dominate the palate while the citrus slows down on the retrohale. All in all, an enjoyable smoke and a great addition to the everyday grind of this great sport of Cigar smoking. Grab a few and put a couple on “ice” as a little time could do some good work of rounding this one out. The Cubo Maduro smokes on the fuller side of medium with very little touch up work. I’d slide this in as a mid morning snack or for the accomplished smoker add a cup of Joe and sit back relax and enjoy! Looking for a tasty treat? Grab a hold of this semi-sweet chocolate and light citrus stick. Better yet grab some cold brew and a lighter add a Cubo Maduro and enjoy the 80 minute joyride…..

La Madrina, The Godmother

At first grab, your eyes are drawn to the band. As a fan of tattoos, I appreciate the artwork here. Creativity of bands almost seems like a declining art. The smooth chocolate colored wrapper’s appearance is toothy and veiny. At first light, I get a woody chocolate feel with a faint taste of spice. As I roll through the middle of this stick, you get an appreciation for the complexity of these flavors. Chocolate, woody, leather and just enough pepper to keep your interest is consistent as I smoke through and enter the final third. Reluctantly removing the band, the stick continues to get better in strength and flavor introducing a bit of toasted almond flavor to this great mix. Overall this has been an enjoyable smoke from our friends over at Dapper and I’d give my 2 cent recommendation on this one. The La Madrina smokes medium to near full. The burn is great with no touch ups necessary. The flavor profile keeps your attention and is a delightful mid-afternoon stick. I’d put it in 3rd position in my 5 a day regimen. This rich chocolaty, earthy, leathery and creamy stick will keep your interest and your senses peaked! Complexity and good construction is enough to keep you calling for more. Get your hands on one, you won’t be disappointed…
