Casa Cuevas Maduro, From the Shadows
Today I get to introduce some of you to a fairly new company and cigar, Casa Cuevas. Now when I say new company, here I mean in name only. Luis Cuevas Sr. and his son Luis Jr., have been manufacturing cigars for decades out of their factory in the Dominican Republic, Tabacalera Las Lavas. This father-son combo is behind the production of some popular names such as Gurkha and Toraño Family Cigars. It is now that the duo has decided to carry out a family brand of their own. Casa Cuevas has three blends, Connecticut, Habano and Maduro. I’ve got the Maduro in toro size today. At first look, the chocolate brown Mexican San Andreas wrapper is slightly toothy and veiny with a gold and black foil band that boasts the family name. The cold draw is filled with semi-sweet chocolate and woods. The notes off the foot is chocolate, cedar and leather. An inch in, cedar and chocolate dominate the profile while lemon citrus shows up in the background. The retrohale is heavy in lemon citrus and spice. Towards the middle, the flavor profile softens giving us chocolate, cedar, lemon peels and a hint of fig. The final third comes around with similar flavors adding moments nuttiness and some pepper. In the last puffs, the pepper got stronger, finishing this cigar off with some bite. The Casa Cuevas Maduro smokes at a medium body and the construction is solid with no burn issues. Wrapping up this stick, I’d say this is a solid introduction into the world of cigars for Casa Cuevas. Coming in around $8 a stick, makes this a very worthy competitor in an already crowded arena. The cigar is definitely taste worthy and gives us more to look forward to from Casa Cuevas. Enjoy…
