La Palina Goldie, A Goldie but Goodie
Many of the cigars we smoke today are rich with history. Sometimes the story behind the cigar or the company behind the cigar paints a picture and gives us some insight into the idea behind the smoke. La Palina is no exception here, it’s roots date back into the 1800’s making their cigars a timeless classic. I’m smoking the La Palina Goldie Toro. A lot of people think the name is associated with the color of the wrapper. However, the Goldie is more of a dedication cigar. Goldie was the wife of the original founder of La Palina, Samuel Paley. Once a year, for the last 5 years, we are graced with a limited run of the Goldie and it’s my turn to indulge. As I alluded to earlier, the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper is a beautiful golden brown with a nice sheen, some flat veins, a nice twist cap fin and of course a classy band. The dry draw is a sweet cedar, tobacco and hay. The first puffs off the foot are strong in cedar, earthiness and a dab of honey. A little further into the first third, you immediately recognize the complexity of the blend. It opens up to a beautiful array of cedar, earth, cream, touch of honey and slight dash of black pepper. The retrohale is cedar with a pleasant dose of pepper. Smoking through the mid-section, the Goldie’s smoking experience is wonderful and the finish is smooth and creamy. The black pepper makes a stronger showing into the blend as I move into the final third. The last third continues to display the elegant assortment of flavors and the mini vacation has been great. The last puff is just as good as the first with no bitterness. The La Paling Goldie smokes as a solid medium. The burn was good throughout and required no touch ups. The Goldie is a great stick. This is a definite must smoke and must stock. With this only coming to us once a year, you better grab em by the box. You will find yourself revisiting the La Palina Goldie often, so do what you can to keep a steady supply. And as always, enjoy the Goodlife …..
