Serino Wayfarer, The Journey Begins
When Carson Serino set out on his backpacking journey in Iceland some time ago, he found limited selections at the local shops mostly stocked with Cuban staples. Smoking those cigars for three weeks gave Serino an inspiration that we all get to benefit from, the Wayfarer. Out of the Humi here at Ford on Fifth, I grabbed the Robusto. The Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper is a beautiful lightly oiled medium brown with visible veins throughout and a classy foil band showing it’s brand. The dry draw is earthy with a hint of sweet cocoa. The first few puffs off the foot is a pleasant array of woods, earth and a hint of sweet vanilla on the finish. Deeper into the first third, the woods begin to lead as the dominate notes along with earth, leather, vanilla and tame spices in the background. The retrohale is smooth with vanilla and spice, in my opinion the best part of the cigar so far. As I cruise into the middle portion of the Wayfarer, Oak and Cedar continue to dominate the palate followed by hints of soft black pepper while vanilla joins on the finish. The burn is great so far, I’ve got about a 2 inch ash with no waves. The final third is starting to kick up in the spice category. The woods start to take a backseat to the black pepper, however it is not overwhelming, more like an invited spice I’ve been waiting for. In addition, I’m getting some toasted almonds in the background which adds some texture to this delicious smoke. In the final puffs, there was very little bitterness that you tend to get on some sticks and this one closed out nice. The Wayfarer smokes as a solid medium, and as mentioned before, burned well with no touch ups. This an excellent everyday stick for you one-a-dayers and a good tweener for you multi-cigar over achievers. I’d say the Wayfarer is a stock up type stick, so grab a bunch and enjoy with any occasion. If you can’t think of one, then just enjoy the good life…..
